Needle Sunburst Camptown, Flamingo take 3rd over Thomas United 2-0
By Franklin Wilson
Another successful Chubby Under-13 league ended yesterday afternoon at the Tucville ground with Santos being crowned 2009 Champions following a hard fought 1-0 win over Sunburst Camptown in the final which was a tough encounter.
Flamingo won the third place trophy with a 2-0 extra time win over Thomas United, compliments of strikes by Sheldon Fletcher in the 65th minute and Orlando Ricketts in the 68th.
The final though lived up to its pre-game billing as a potentially tough battle and as it turned out, Santos were the better prepared side in the circumstances. They played more compact football in sweltering mid morning heat and capitalized on a blunder made by Camptown’s custodian in the 11th minute to be crowned the new Chubby Under-13 champions.
Travis Alexander merely attempted a chip inside the Camptown attacking third eleven minutes into the game and the goalie blundered by not scooping up the ball cleanly as it eased through his grasp and legs into the back of the nets to the delight of the Santos players and supporters.
Thereafter, it was not an easy task for either team to penetrate the goal area of their opponents despite a few chances being created either way. Santos held more possession and sought to work the ball around more than their opponents.
Tournament Most Valuable Player and Santos Captain Job Caesar enjoyed another good game as he again controlled the back with great efficiency. Job also showed earlier in the tournament that he can be equally devastating as a forward. Being named MVP clinched a memorable double for Caesar who also took a similar award in the Pee Wee Under-11 competition.
Camptown’s Azumah Small ended as the leading goal scorer of the competition with a tally of 7 while Santos’ Omar Jones was named the best goalkeeper. Camptown, apart from taking the runner-up trophy, also walked away with the Most Disciplined Team award.
Santos said they were dedicating the win to the memory of the late Mervin Smith who died under tragic circumstances and was buried last week. Smith, who died at the age of 18, represented Santos at the Under-13, 15 and 17 levels before his unfortunate passing on October 9.
At the presentation ceremony, Georgetown Football Association Vice President Wayne Ford complimented all the teams for participating in the tournament especially the winner. Ford also complemented the sponsor, Guyana Beverage Inc. for their continued committed support to the game at the youth level.
