Fourteen year-old Jason Khalil produced a stunning upset over number one ranked Under-19 player Oliver Downes, as play in the Woodpecker Products sponsored National Junior Squash Championships continued Friday night, at the Georgetown Club.
In what was by far the biggest upset of the tournament so far, an obviously over confident Downes took the court thinking that he would just walk through his opponent, but the hungrier Khalil never compromised, and even had match point at 10-8 in the third. Downes saved the humiliation of going down three straight, but could not derail the on rushing Khalil as he brought proceedings to its inevitable conclusion 11/9 in the fourth. The result means that Khalil is now favoured to add the Under-19 National title to the under-15 and 17 titles which he has virtually already wrapped up.
Downes chances of winning the title now depends on whether Khalil loses to Raphael DeGroot which could improve his chances of getting back into contention.
