Following the disappointment in the recent Next Level Entertainment championships, the number one ranked club in Georgetown, Courts Pacesetters returned to glory on Sunday when they completed a clean five–a–side sweep.
Pacesetters had a lopsided 39-10 victory with Hugh Arthur scoring 13 points and Stephon Gillis contributing nine points against Dyna’s Ravens in the final of the Division I edition of the two–day ‘Basketball Family Fun Day’.
Pacesetters had also romped to triumph on the previous day, Saturday, in the Division III competition with a 29–11 points win over Bounty Colts. The consecutive success for the club is expected to improve their waning confidence.
The Courts–sponsored franchise had slumped to a crushing second round loss in the Next Level event that nemesis, Ravens emphatically won.
The win is a major boost for them ahead of the Division I and III events this weekend.
The Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) that also held the Family Fun Day, will jump start its Division I and III knockout tournaments this weekend at their headquarter venue, the Burnham Basketball Court.
Meanwhile, GABA President, Trevor Rose lamented the lack of support from some clubs in the City. He said that those clubs did not understand the concept of the fundraising activity and as such very little was done on their part.
“I expected more support from the clubs. We had pre–meetings six weeks in advance and I also gave them tickets to sell but apart from Pacesetters, Scorpions, Ravens and Colts, the others did not participate in the event,” Rose disclosed.
The GABA President said that the other clubs did not sell the bar–b–que tickets that were distributed for sale.
He said some of them sold merely two while others brought back the full compliment of 25 tickets that each club was given. “The GABA is really disappointed with the level of support. If this level of support from clubs continues, it doesn’t make sense at all to plan these events.
We are really, really disappointed with those clubs,” Rose reiterated yesterday.
According to the first term president, the event was put together to raise funds for events that will require usage of the Sports Hall, which is quite expensive to rent.
He said that the association is trying to be self sufficient.
Rose is of the opinion that those clubs that boycotted the competition should be penalised but he is not a unilateral decision maker. “We will decide at an Executive meeting what action to take against those clubs,” he indicated.
The GABA head made it clear that he will table a penalty in the form of a fine to address those defaulting clubs.
“I think we should implement a rule that if clubs don’t participate in fundraisers, they should be fined,” Rose believed.
The event last weekend was also held to formerly launch the upcoming knockout events that are scheduled for this weekend.
Rose came to the presidency on the platform that the sport will be proliferated in Georgetown.
