Essequibo defeated Berbice by 61 runs in the third round of the Castrol U-15 Inter-County 50 overs cricket competition played yesterday at the Anna Regina Ground on the Essequibo Coast.
Berbice won the toss and asked Essequibo to bat first on a pitch with preparation moisture and lead by their Captain Ricardo Adams who hit an attractive 33, the host made 145 all out in 47.2 overs.
Vice Captain Fizul Karim and all-rounder Vijay Surujpaul supported with 27 each for the home team who lost to Demerara in their last match.
Off-spinner Shilendra Shameer was the visitors’ best bowler with 3-19 off eight overs, while national under-15 left arm unorthodox spinner Gudakesh Moti and Lyden Lewis took 2-11 off 7.2 and 2-23 off 8 overs respectively.
Berbice in reply were bowled out for 84 in 34.2 overs with Veerapen Permaul, the brother of First-Class left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul, top scoring with 20. Lewis and Shameer contributed 15 each for the Berbice side.
Man-of-the-Match Surujpaul returned with the ball to capture 4-15 off 10 overs of off-spin while medium pacers Mark Tyrell 3-17 and Ahmad Khan 2-14 bowled well for the Essequibians, playing their first season at this level on home soil.
The teams will meet again today from 09:30hrs at the same venue as Essequibo with three points from three matches, hope to deny Berbice their first points in the three team competition.
Favorites Demerara, who lead the points table with three points from two matches, will play Berbice in the final two games on Saturday and Sunday at the Guyana National Stadium in the round-robin tournament. (Zaheer Mohamed)
