Rakesh Gorrahoo, 35, of 172 Kingston, Corriverton, was yesterday placed on $200,000 bail by Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson. It was alleged that on February 25, last, he stole 35 bags of sugar from the MV Helogan which was anchored at a wharf in the Demerara River. The sugar was the property of Guyana Sugar Corporation.
Gorrahoo pleaded not guilty through his lawyer Leslie Sobers.
Sobers argued that Gorrahoo was kept in custody longer than the stipulated 72 hours. He said that the accused was in custody for eight days because the police had thought that Gorrahoo was an inside man.
The lawyer further told the court that there was a robbery by another vessel and some of the boarders from that vessel came onto the ship and took the sugar.
Sobers said, “My client could have never committed this because he cannot lift 1.2 tons of sugar by himself.” The lawyer then asked that bail be granted in a reasonable sum.
Police Prosecutor Denise Griffith did not oppose bail, but sought to clarify what the defence stated.
The prosecutor told the court that there was no report of a robbery, adding that the defendant was caught throwing the sugar onto another vessel. A security guard on board of the MV Helogan raised an alarm, and several shots were fired at the guard.
She added that the defendant was caught in the ship.
He is expected to make his next court appearance on March 27.
