Colin Gomes receives on the spot upgrade
The Guyana Judo Association (GJA) recommenced their competitive season with a Republic Anniversary competition on Sunday last at the Rising Sun Dojo Club (RSDC), Marian Academy Auditorium, Carifesta Avenue.

In the under 154 lbs category, Colin Gomes (RSJC) copped the first place ahead of Imran Mohamed of House of Water JC (HWJC).
Taking the top spot in the over 154 lbs division was Verol Williams (HWJC). Winston Stuart of (RSJC) and Vernon Williams (HWJC) placed second and third respectively.
Taking the number one position in the open category was RSJC’s Bruce Fraser ahead of Verol Williams and Vernon Williams both of HWJC.
The officials (referees) who were in charge of Sunday’s proceedings were Sensei’s Charles Ambrose, Berkeley Charles, Bruce Fraser and William Arthur.
Meanwhile, the Technical/Grading Committee of the GJA made an on the spot promotion; Judoka Colin Gomes was graded to orange belt for his outstanding performance during the competition.
The GJA is aiming to send a team of six Judokas to represent Guyana in Boa Vista, Brazil at the “Copa Takashi Hagui Hara” Judo championships slated for April 25, 2009.
According to the GJA these competitions will be used to identify talented Judokas who will be placed on a special training programme as part of their short term plans to prepare athletes to represent Guyana at various Regional and International competitions during this year, and (long term) for possible participation at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
