NAPS hold interactive HIV/AIDS session with riders & officials
The Guyana Cycling Federation, Ministry of Health and the National Aids Programme Secretariat (NAPS) have intensified preparations for this year’s five-stage road race which is set for early November with stages set for all three counties.
A number of planning meetings between the bodies including the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sport have been held as the entities seek to crystallize plans for the race. Saturday last after the annual Toucan Industries cycling programme held at the National Park, Mobalisation Coordinator of NAPS Nazim Hussain hosted the first of two interactive sessions with the riders and officials who will all be taking part in the five stage race.
According to Hussain, NAPS is aiming at equipping the riders and officials with the requisite information that would empower them to be competent fighters against the deadly scourge of HIV/AIDS.
Last Saturday’s session dealt more or less with the sensitisation process to the disease, how you can get it and how you cannot.
“At next week’s session, we would be focusing on stigma and discrimination which is very important since athletes are also vulnerable.”
Hussain gave the example of a player from another sport that has been tested positive and when the teammates of the individual found out they were afraid to come into contact with him and this he said is because of a lack of education.
“These sessions are to more or less educate the participants on how to deal with such situations and not to stigmatise or discriminate against an individual or athlete who is positive.”
NAPS also did some sensitisation work at the previous Sunday’s Track Meet at Everest ground with the aim of strengthening the cycling fraternity on the issue. The interactive sessions will go for three hours each. (Franklin Wilson)
