Region Nine will be represented at the 19th edition of the Kashif and Shanghai football competition compliments of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport.
The declaration was made recently by Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry Steve Ninvalle at the St. Ignatius ground in the said region last weekend.
In front of a large gathering there to witness the final of the male and female Rupununi Football Association male and female final, Ninvalle declared that the Region will be returned to the Kashif and Shanghai fold following a hiatus of four years.
Parliamentary Secretary explained that the time was ripe for the region to once again brush shoulders with the best in Guyana and that the Ministry will facilitate players and officials getting to and from the tournament.
Yesterday Ninvalle disclosed that it is his view that Region Nine will do much better this year than in previous visits to Kashif and Shanghai.
The government official noted that the discipline, determination and enthusiasm exhibited by players leaves little doubt in his mind that Region Nine will give a very good account of themselves.
“I have seen discipline, enthusiasm and tenacity. Obviously these form a foundation for success at any level and the ministry is proud to be part and parcel of the Region’s participation in the tournament,” Ninvalle said.
Region Nine last played in Kashif and Shanghai in 2004. The Member of Parliament promised to assist in making sure that the selected team is well prepared while offering to lend coach Dennis `Chow’ Hunte to help in its fine tuning.
He added that plans will be in place to have at least two warm up matches when the team arrives in Georgetown and possible encampment before leaving for the city.
Sport Minister Dr. Frank Anthony, Permanent Secretary Keith Booker and Ninvalle met recently with Kashif and Shanghai executives to iron out the details of Region Nine’s return among other issues.
Sixteen teams will be contesting this year Kashif and Shanghai competition and the final could possibly be played away from Linden for the fist time in 19 years if some key personnel have their way in forcing the organisers to shift the culmination.
