Exciting matches witnessed in Amerindian Heritage Month football tournament
Youth, Sport and Culture officer of Region 9, Megan Thomas, urged residents of that region to use every available opportunity to elevate themselves.
She was at the time delivering the feature address at the opening ceremony of the 11th Heritage Month male and female football competition which got underway at the St Ignatius Football Ground Rupununi on Wednesday last.
Football buffs were treated to several exciting matches that whetted their appetites and left them longing for more. In the first encounter, on day one, Central ‘B’ engaged North Rupununi in a match that necessitated a penalty shootout to separate the two teams. In the end central ‘B’ prevailed 5-4. In the second match of the day, North Rupununi, led by a goal in the 6th minute by Tessa McDonald defeated Central Girls 1-0.
The third match played on that day was also exciting when East Central needled South Central; the scorer being Anthony Roberts in the 34th minute.
The excitement continued on Friday with the women’s match between East Central and South Central. The match went into penalty kicks with East Central prevailing 5-4. In the boys affair on the same day Central ‘A,’ led by a 67th minute goal off the boot of Lorenzo Sampson, sailed home to a 1-nil victory.
The action continued on Friday with North Rupununi, led by a double in the 46th and 53rd minutes of the game by Pauline Browne romped home to a 3-1 triumph over South Central. Marissa VanLong netted the other goal for the winning team in the 61st minute while Beverly Ambrose was the lone scorer for the losers.
In the final match played on Thursday, East Central upset defending champions, South Pakaraimas 4-2. John Fiedtkou found the back of the net for the winners in the 32nd minute while Charwin Fiedtkou netted a double in the 46th and 70th minute respectively.
Marshall DeMetro chipped in with a 60th minute goal to seal the deal for East Central. South Pakaraimas showed some opposition with goals off the boot of Trevor John (53) and Ralph Johnny (89). (Michael Benjamin)
