Canter driver blames motorist after Venezuelan woman struck down in Bartica

(Kaieteur News) – A Venezuelan woman, Iris Mireya Guanares, is hospitalised at the Bartica Regional Hospital after she was struck by a Canter truck along Sixth Avenue, Bartica, Region Seven, on Monday afternoon.

Reports indicate that the accident occurred at around 4:00 p.m.

Guanares was reportedly walking along the grass parapet beside the road when she was struck from behind.

She sustained injuries to her face and body and was bleeding from the nose when she was picked up and rushed to the Bartica Regional Hospital.

She was treated and will remain under observation overnight before doctors decide whether she should be transferred to Georgetown for further treatment.

Her daughter, however, fears that without a CT scan, doctors may not be able to determine whether Guanares suffered a serious head injury that could prove fatal if not diagnosed and treated promptly.

Meanwhile, police have detained two drivers in connection with the accident.

Reports reaching Kaieteur News are that the canter driver is blaming the driver of another vehicle for causing the crash.

According to the canter driver, the other vehicle was speeding recklessly, forcing him to swerve to avoid a collision. In doing so, he allegedly struck Guanares, who was reportedly on her way home.

Guanares’ daughter has also expressed concern about the police investigation.

She claims the accident occurred around 4:00 p.m., but officers only examined the scene later that evening, as seen in the video below.

She questioned what she described as the slow pace at which police moved to secure the scene and gather evidence.
