(Kaieteur News) Police ranks conducting a drug eradication exercise in Bartica Village, Upper Berbice River, on Thursday discovered a 12-gauge shotgun and six matching cartridges at a makeshift camp.
The exercise was conducted between 6:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. and was led by a gazetted officer.
According to police, ranks located a field measuring approximately two acres, where close to 5,000 suspected cannabis plants were found.
The plants, which ranged between three and six inches in height, were uprooted and destroyed.
During a search of a makeshift camp measuring approximately 10 feet by 10 feet, ranks discovered a 12-gauge shotgun and six matching cartridges.
The firearm and ammunition were taken to the Central Police Station in New Amsterdam, where they were lodged.
The makeshift camp was also destroyed by fire.
No arrests have been made. Investigations continue.
