Canje businessman killed after struck by car driven by Dr. Ramayya

(Kaieteur News) A popular businessman of Cumberland, East Canje, Berbice, succumbed to injuries he sustained after he was reportedly struck by a car along the Nigg Public Road, Corentyne, Berbice.

Dead: Ishwarnauth Bisram, 42

Dead is 42-year-old Ishwarnauth Bisram, also known as Ajay Bisram, formerly of Belvedere Squatting Area, Corentyne.
The incident occurred at about 9:55 p.m. on Saturday.

According to police, Bisram was struck by motor car PZZ 1906, which was being driven by a 79-year-old doctor of Whim Village, Corentyne.

information provided to this publication confirmed that the driver was Dr. Veerasammy Ramayya, a prominent political figure in East Berbice-Corentyne.

According to preliminary investigations, Ramayya was driving east along the northern lane of Nigg Public Road when Bisram allegedly walked from south to north across the road and into the path of the vehicle. Ramayya reportedly applied the brakes in an attempt to avoid a collision, but was unable to do so, and the front of the car struck Bisram.

He sustained injuries about his body and was taken to the Port Mourant Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival by a doctor on duty.

Bisram’s sister, Sandy Bisram, said she initially tried contacting her brother but received no response.
She later learnt that he had stopped to purchase food from a Chinese restaurant and had apparently stopped a car that was waiting for him across the road.
Sandy said footage she reviewed showed her brother crossing the road when the vehicle struck him.

Recounting the devastating moment she learnt of her brother’s death, she said her mother called her on Saturday evening and told her that he had been involved in an accident.
“My brother had an accident, and I said that can’t be true. Couple of minutes later, my aunt called me and told me that he did have an accident,” she recalled.

She said she then instructed her son, who was attending a wake at the time, to go to the hospital and verify what had happened, as she desperately hoped the reports were untrue.
Even after learning that her brother had died, Sandy said she struggled to accept the reality.

“I still didn’t believe. And then he stopped and he said, ‘Mom, it’s true.’ Then I told him to come and pick me up, and when I go, I see my brother already dead,” she said.
The body is currently at Ramoo’s Funeral Home awaiting a post-mortem examination.

Sandy said the driver did not assist in taking her brother to the hospital. The family, she added, wants a full investigation and justice for Bisram.
“We want justice for our brother. We had one brother. One brother we get. And he’s very close to me, because both of us were working together since we were little. We want justice for our brother. My brother is a good person,” she said.

Meanwhile, a breathalyser test conducted on the driver returned a reading of 11 micrograms, which is below the prescribed legal limit.
The driver remains in police custody as investigations continue.

Police have also identified CCTV cameras in the vicinity and will review the footage as part of the investigation.
