The house engulfed in flames
(Kaieteur News) A Rose Hall Town, Corentyne Berbice home was completely destroyed by fire during the early hours of Sunday at First Street, Swamp Section.
The Guyana Fire Service (GFS) said it responded to reports of a house on fire at First Street, Swamp Section, Rose Hall Town, Corentyne.
The building, an unoccupied one-flat wooden structure, was engulfed in flames by the time firefighters arrived. The Rose Hall Fire Station is located a short distance from the property, allowing firefighters to respond quickly and contain and extinguish the blaze.
The property and all of its contents were, however, completely destroyed.
A neighbour who spoke to Kaieteur News said the owners of the property had migrated some time ago and that the house was periodically checked by persons living nearby.
The woman, who requested anonymity, said her mother alerted her to the fire.
“This morning, about 5:00 time, when we open the windows to wake my brother to go to work, she said the fire catch from the veranda. Like somebody like they burn it,” she recounted.
According to the neighbour, persons occasionally checked on the property but were unaware that two individuals, reportedly of unsound mind, had been frequenting the abandoned house.
“It get some mad man does go there, because one set of old stuff went downstairs, and upstairs inside the house. He gone jail about a month now, but there is a next one that does go there,” she explained.
Residents believe the fire may have been deliberately set by one of the individuals who frequented the property.
Divisional Fire Officer Clive McDonald confirmed to Kaieteur News on Sunday that the fire was deliberately set.
