Chief Magistrate sets September dates for Mohameds’ extradition case following CCJ ruling
(Kaieteur News) Extradition committal proceedings against Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed and his father, Nazar Mohamed, are set to resume in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on 3rd,4th,7th,8th,9th and 10th September.
Chief Magistrate Judy Latchman scheduled the September hearing dates following a ruling by the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) on 29th July, 2026, which dismissed the father-and-son duo’s appeal and lifted a five-month interim stay that had paused the proceedings since March.

The United States government formally requested the extradition of the Mohameds on 30th October, 2025, in connection with an 11-count federal indictment charging them with conspiracy, mail fraud, wire fraud, and money laundering. The following day, Home Affairs Minister Oneidge Walrond issued the Authority to Proceed (ATP) enabling Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman to issue arrest warrants and launch committal proceedings.
In December 2025, the Mohameds mounted a judicial review application against the Minister of Home Affairs, the Attorney General, and the Chief Magistrate, seeking to quash the ATP. They argued that the extradition process was unlawfully initiated because Minister Walrond was allegedly affected by actual and apparent political bias when signing the order.
After their challenge was dismissed by the High Court on 4th February, 2026, and by the Guyana Court of Appeal on 17th March, 2026, the applicants turned to the regional apex court. On 25th March, 2026, the CCJ granted an emergency interim stay while agreeing to treat the special leave application as the substantive appeal.
Delivering its final verdict, the CCJ, while acknowledging that the rule against bias applies to executive decision-making, the court held that the appellants failed to establish that the issuance of the ATP was improperly influenced or infected by irrelevant considerations.
By lifting the interim stay, the CCJ cleared the path for Chief Magistrate Latchman to proceed with the committal hearings to determine whether the extradition request meets the statutory standards to commit the two to stand trial in the United States.
