(Kaieteur News) – The People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) and A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) are seeking to breathe new life into a years-old investigation into President Irfaan Ali’s Long Creek farm, claiming that investigators under the former APNU+AFC administration had already completed a probe and recommended that the lands be repossessed and criminal charges considered.
In a statement on Friday, the opposition said the issue was not a new allegation but one that had been investigated by the former State Assets Recovery Agency (SARU) after the APNU+AFC government assumed office in 2015.
According to the PNCR/APNU, SARU’s investigation examined the operation of what was described as the “Irfaan Ali Long Creek Farm” and produced findings which investigators believed warranted legal action. However, the party contends that while broader fraud matters were pursued, the Long Creek investigation was ultimately left out.
The opposition said investigators found that the land had been leased to “Mohammed Ali,” but alleged that the identification card submitted in relation to the lease belonged not to President Ali but to his father.
The statement further claimed that investigators encountered several Spanish-speaking foreign nationals working on the property during site visits and that the farm was engaged in poultry rearing and raising cattle imported from Suriname under what was reportedly an agricultural exchange programme that predated the change of government in 2015.
APNU also alleged that investigators linked the Long Creek operation to wider inquiries involving a Kamuni Creek farm jointly operated by Ali and Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo, where they claimed cattle and equipment belonging to the Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) had been found.
The opposition asserted that, after completing their work, investigators recommended that authorities determine there had been breaches of the Guyana Lands and Surveys Commission Act and the conditions of the land lease.
According to the statement, the recommendations also called for the immediate repossession of the leased lands and for charges of misfeasance in public office to be considered, alleging that Ali failed to disclose his dealings as required under the Integrity Commission Act.
The PNCR/APNU argued that although the President enjoys constitutional immunity from prosecution while in office, such protection does not shield him from public accountability.
Against that backdrop, the party called on both President Ali and Vice President Jagdeo to resign to facilitate what it described as an independent and impartial investigation.
The opposition also demanded a fresh probe by investigators with no political affiliation and said the matter raises serious questions about transparency and accountability at the highest levels of government.
The allegations have previously been denied by the government, and no court has found President Ali guilty of any offence arising from the Long Creek property. The administration has also consistently dismissed opposition claims of corruption as politically motivated.
It was Leader of the Opposition Azruddin Mohamed who recently shone the spotlight on the President’s sprawling farm and alleged that the Guyanese use state resources to develop the mega facility. President Ali has since denied the allegations,.saying he took bank loans to finance his business.
The opposition leader said the “mind-boggling 150-acre ranch investment amounting to more than $2.2 billion” was “developed in just three years after Ali became president of Guyana in 2020,” and could “never” be substantiated by a presidential salary of $3.7 million per month.
