Pitamber and Couchman locked in tight race for National Junior Chess title
Kaieteur Sports – Candidate Master Sachin Pitamber leads the pack after six rounds of the EnerMech Guyana Inc. National Junior Chess Championship. Defending champion Kyle Couchman is hot on his heels, matching Pitamber with an undefeated 6 points but sitting in second place solely on tiebreak margins.

Neither of the boys have dropped a game since the nine-round tournament commenced on Monday, July 13th, 2026, at Olympic House, Liliendaal. All eyes now turn to today, Saturday, July 18th, when the two frontrunners will face off head-to-head in a thrilling round-nine final showdown that will likely decide the championship. If two players are tied at the end of nine rounds, the championship will head into a rapid three-game playoff to finally determine the new National Junior Champion.

Both frontrunners will look to maintain their flawless momentum in the remaining rounds as they fight for the coveted 2026 National Junior Chess Championship title.
Trailing the leaders closely is WCM Aditi Joshi with 4.5 points, following a tough fourth-round loss to CM Pitamber and a draw in the sixth round. Joshi, one of only two female players competing in the male-dominated field, will look to break into the top over the remaining three rounds.

Holding down the middle of the scoreboard, Alexander Zhang sits in fourth place with 4 points, while Jeremy Cole sits in fifth place with 2.5 points. Kataleya Sam and Nicholas Zhang are currently tied for sixth and seventh, respectively, with 2 points each, while Matthew Singh is in eighth place with 1.5 points. Aiden Tinnie sits at 1 point in ninth place, while Javier Davendand is on 0.5 points, rounding out the standings in tenth place.
The tournament, featuring a classical time control of 90 minutes per player with a 30-second increment, will conclude today, July 18, 2026. The games are live-streamed on Lichess.org, while pairings and results are published on Chess-results.com by FIDE Arbiter John Lee.
