Kaieteur Sports – Kuru Kururu Football Club completed a stunning rise from strugglers to champions over the weekend, defeating Timehri United FC to capture the inaugural East Bank Football Association (EBFA) Under-13 Youth Ensemble title.
The triumph capped a remarkable transformation for the club, which endured a winless 2025 campaign in both the EBFA U13 and U15 competitions. One year later, Kuru Kururu returned as a vastly improved outfit, stringing together an unbeaten run in the newly introduced Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Youth Ensemble Programme to secure the championship in emphatic fashion.
The success also underlined the impact of the GFF’s grassroots initiative, which was launched this year to provide young footballers with structured competition and a pathway for long-term development.
EBFA Coordinator Hodiah Garraway praised the champions for the progress they displayed throughout the tournament.
“I have seen strength and great development in the players. They came out and did their best, won all their games and stayed on top,” Garraway said.
The 2026 EBFA U13 Youth Ensemble League, which got underway on May 16, featured four clubs—Kuru Kururu FC, Timehri United FC, Herstelling Raiders FC and Circuit Ville Jaguars FC.
Across nine matches, more than 100 aspiring footballers showcased their skills, discipline and sportsmanship, highlighting the success of the competition’s debut season while providing plenty of exciting football.
Kuru Kururu’s dominance was reflected in the individual awards. Immanuel Reid finished as the joint leading scorer with eight goals, sharing the Golden Boot honours with Timehri United’s Jeremiah Stuart.
The champions also collected several major accolades, with Okel Morrison, who netted five goals, being named the competition’s Most Valuable Player. Teammates Leandre Benjamine and Xavi Griffith, who each scored twice, were also recognised among the tournament’s standout performers, while Dokari Robertson claimed the Best Goalkeeper award. Timehri United’s Raheem Alexander (four goals) and Herstelling Raiders’ Micaicah French (two goals) also earned recognition for their outstanding performances.
With the league now concluded, champions Kuru Kururu FC and runners-up Timehri United FC have both secured qualification for the National Youth Ensemble Championship, scheduled to be contested between July and August.
Attention will now shift to the EBFA Under-15 Youth Ensemble competition, which is expected to conclude in late July or early August.
The Youth Ensemble Programme, the first initiative of its kind introduced by the Guyana Football Federation, continues to strengthen youth football by providing meaningful competitive opportunities for young players while promoting technical development, teamwork, discipline and a lasting passion for the game.
