Kaieteur Sports – The President, Executives and Staff of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB), together with the entire cricket fraternity of Guyana, join the Caribbean and international cricket communities in mourning the passing of the Right Excellent Sir Garfield St. Aubrun Sobers, National Hero of Barbados and one of the greatest cricketers the world has ever known.
Sir Garfield was more than a legendary and iconic cricketer. He was a symbol of West Indian excellence, pride and unity. His extraordinary ability as a batsman, bowler and fielder established him as the complete cricketer and, in the eyes of many, the greatest all-rounder in the history of the game.
Throughout his distinguished career, Sir Garfield represented the West Indies with unmatched brilliance, courage and dignity. His remarkable achievements inspired generations across Guyana, Barbados, the wider Caribbean and throughout the cricketing world. He carried the hopes and aspirations of the West Indian people and helped establish our region as a respected and formidable force in international cricket.
While his records and performances will forever occupy a special place in cricketing history, his greatest legacy will be the pride he brought to the people of the Caribbean and the countless young cricketers he inspired to pursue excellence.
GCB President Bissoondyal Singh, the Executives and Staff of the Guyana Cricket Board, on behalf of the cricket fraternity and membership of the Guyana Cricket Board, extend profound and sincere condolences to his children, grandchildren, relatives, friends, loved ones, the Government and people of Barbados, the Barbados Cricket Association and the entire West Indian cricket family.
The cricketing world has lost a true giant, but the name and legacy of Sir Garfield Sobers will live forever in the history and spirit of our beloved game.
May his soul rest in eternal peace, and may his extraordinary legacy continue to inspire generations to come.
