Kaieteur Sports – A sizeable contingent of Guyanese hockey players departed earlier this week for Trinidad and Tobago to compete in the inaugural IPH Outdoor Tournament, with three local clubs carrying the nation’s hopes when the four-day championship gets underway from today, July 9 to July 12.
Guyana Hockey Board confirmed yesterday that Guyana will be represented by Old Fort Hockey Club, Georgetown Cricket Club Hockey men’s and women’s teams, and a mixed squad from Hikers Hockey Club competing under the banner Shane & Friends Elite.
The Hikers-based outfit will feature players drawn from Hikers, Old Fort and Saints, along with players from Trinidad and Tobago, underscoring the collaborative spirit of the inaugural regional competition.

Three Guyanese teams to make full use of their chances as Inaugural IPH Outdoor tournament swing off today.
The tournament presents an important opportunity for Guyanese players to test themselves against quality regional opposition while gaining valuable outdoor hockey experience. Beyond the results, the championship is expected to aid the continued development of the local game by exposing players to different styles of play and higher levels of competition.
The event also offers participating clubs a chance to strengthen relationships with their Caribbean counterparts, fostering greater collaboration while contributing to the long-term growth of hockey across both Guyana and the wider region.
In a release, the Guyana Hockey Board praised the dedication of the clubs, players, coaches and supporters whose commitment has made the trip possible. The Board noted that participation in tournaments of this nature is vital to raising the standard of local hockey as Guyana continues to build competitive pathways for both senior and emerging athletes.
The Board also acknowledged the contributions of private sector sponsors, supporters and local fundraising initiatives, highlighting that the travelling clubs worked tirelessly to secure the resources needed for the overseas assignment. According to the release, the support received demonstrates the value placed on sport, youth development and community representation.
The Guyana Hockey Board concluded by extending its best wishes to all the travelling teams and players, expressing confidence that they will represent both their clubs and Guyana with distinction at the inaugural IPH Outdoor Tournament.
