NSC behind Malachi Austin as he seeks World U20 Championship glory
Kaieteur Sports – Guyana’s national 400m record holder, Malachi Austin, has received a timely boost from the National Sports Commission (NSC) as he prepares to represent the Golden Arrowhead at the 21st World Athletics U20 Championships, scheduled for August 5-9 at Howard Field on the campus of the University of Oregon in the United States.
The 19-year-old met with Director of Sport Steve Ninvalle on Wednesday, where he was assured of the Government’s continued commitment to supporting the development of athletics and nurturing the country’s emerging sporting talent.

Austin heads into the global championships in outstanding form after a remarkable freshman season at Louisiana State University (LSU), where he consistently lowered his personal best times while competing against some of the strongest collegiate athletes in the United States.
His most memorable performance came at the NCAA East Regional in Lexington, Kentucky, where he produced a stunning run of 44.87 seconds to set a new Guyana national record in the men’s 400 metres.
The historic performance also made him the first Guyanese athlete to break the coveted 45-second barrier, further cementing his status as the country’s fastest-ever one-lap runner.
The talented quarter-miler has already built an impressive résumé at the junior level. Austin is a two-time CARIFTA Games 400m champion, a CARIFTA 400m Silver medallist, and also claimed the silver medal in the event at the most recent Commonwealth Youth Games, achievements that have established him among the Caribbean’s brightest young sprint prospects.
During the meeting, Ninvalle praised Austin not only for his achievements on the NCAA Division I circuit but also for the professionalism and maturity he has displayed while representing Guyana abroad.
The Director of Sport said the NSC, along with the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, is proud of Austin’s accomplishments and views him as one of the athletes capable of inspiring the next generation of Guyanese track and field stars.
He reiterated that the Commission remains committed to supporting what he described as the future of athletics in Guyana.
Austin expressed gratitude for the Commission’s continued encouragement, noting that the support serves as added motivation ahead of one of the biggest competitions of his young career.
The World U20 Championships in Oregon will mark Austin’s second appearance at the prestigious event.
At the 2024 edition in Lima, Peru, he advanced to the semi-finals, gaining valuable international experience against the world’s best junior athletes.
This time, however, the Guyanese standout will arrive with significantly greater confidence, stronger credentials and a national record to his name as he sets his sights on reaching the podium and bringing home a historic gold medal for Guyana.
