(Kaieteur News) – The Ministry of Public Works is preparing to spend approximately $8.2 billion on the rehabilitation and reconstruction of several main access roads across Regions One, Seven, Eight, Nine and Ten.
The planned expenditure, estimated at $8,196,707,477, was disclosed in a recent invitation for bids issued by the ministry, which is seeking contractors to undertake the works.
According to the tender notice, 10 road projects are planned for Region One at an estimated cost of $1,552,730,040. The projects include the rehabilitation of the Kumaka to Hosororo Main Access Road, Independence Wharf Road in Mabaruma, and the Kumaka to Kwebanna road in Moruca (Phase Two), which includes one kilometre of concrete pavement.
Works will also be carried out on internal roads at Matthews Ridge, as well as the Koberimo, Wauna and Caborara Hill roads. Village roads in Waramuri, Haimaracabra, Parakese and Para in Moruca are also slated for rehabilitation.
In Region Seven, the ministry has identified eight road projects valued at $983,235,581. These include the Bartica-Potaro Road, Waterfront to Primary School Road at Issano, Mora Camp Main Access Road, Agatash Ballfield Road, Dagg Point Road, Bartica Township roads, and the Karrau Main Access Road.
For Region Eight, two projects worth an estimated $214,081,635 are planned. These include the rehabilitation of the Mango Landing to Mahdia Road, as well as Tiger Hill Road and Bridge.
The largest allocation has been earmarked for Region Nine, where 13 projects are expected to cost approximately $5,096,092,060.
The ministry said internal village roads at Moco-Moco, Kumu, Quarrie, Quatata, Yupukari, Fly Hill, Toka, Massara, Araunputa, Fair View, Surama, Parkwanau, Quiko and Meriwau will be rehabilitated.
Works are also planned for the Culvert City and Tabatinga road networks in Lethem. In addition, reinforced concrete culverts will be constructed along the Hunt Oil stretch and at Corkwood.
In Region 10, two projects estimated at $352,568,161 have been listed. They include the rehabilitation of the Orealla to Kwakwani Road and Bridges (Phase Six), covering 20 kilometres, and the rehabilitation of the Kimbia Access Road, spanning four kilometres.
The projects form part of the government’s $10 billion hinterland roads programme, for which funding was approved for the Ministry of Public Works.
Bids for the projects are scheduled to be opened on 30th July, 2026, at the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board.
