Consultancy services for Mahaica-Abary Road to be financed by US$156M world bank loan
(Kaieteur News) – The Ministry of Public Works will use part of a US$156 million loan from the world bank to provide consultancy services for the reconstruction of the existing road network on the East Coast Demerara – Mahaica Bridge to Abary Bridge Road Corridor.
According to a request for expression of interest published on the government procurement website, the consultancy service would include the review of designs, procurement support and construction supervision consultancy [inclusive of Environmental and Social (E&S) Compliance] for the road project.

The tender notice states that the Guyana Government has received financing from the World Bank toward the cost of the Integrated Transport Corridors Project (ITCP) and intends to apply part of the proceeds for consulting services.
The consultancy service covers two components civil works (CW) 1 and 2. According to the document, CW 1 will involve the improvement of approximately 27 kilometers of roadway and associated roadway structures, and CW 2 will involve the extension/construction of the three (3) main bridges, namely the Mahaica River, Mahaicony River and Abary River Bridges. The civil works are located within the section of road corridor in Regions Four and Five, specifically the section between the Mahaica River Bridge and the Abary River Bridge.
The document states that the consulting services will include a detailed review of the existing designs for CW 1; a detailed review of the bid documents submitted for the design-build contract for CW 2; providing procurement support to the client during the bidding process for CW1 and CW2; and supervision of CW1 and CW 2 contracts during the construction and defects liability periods.
The expected timeframe for delivery of this assignment is 42 calendar months, and is projected to utilise an estimated 446 person, the ministry noted.
Back in October 2025, the Department of Public Information reported that the government signed a US$156 million loan agreement with the world bank toward the Integrated Transport Corridors Project (ITCP).
According to the article, the project was approved in early 2025 by the world bank and is geared toward supporting Guyana in its quest to upgrade and rehabilitate the country’s road infrastructure, and will focus on enhancing the country’s transport network in selected regions in order to allow for better equipped infrastructure that could withstand natural hazards while providing safer and more reliable movement for persons.
It was reported in the media that the government plans to upgrade the East Coast Road Corridor from Mahaica to Rosignol.
Bids for the project are expected to open on 1st August, 2026 at the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board (NPTAB).Section of the East Coast of Demerara which is being upgraded.
