Cop remanded for murder of Cuban woman
(Kaieteur News) – The 20-year-old police constable who was fingered in the murder of Cuban national Dailen Paneque Gomes has been remanded to prison after being formally charged in connection with the crime.
Randy Thomas was on Monday, June 29, hauled before His Worship Magistrate Teriq Mohamed at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court, where the indictable charge of murder, contrary to common law, was read to him. He was not required to plead and was subsequently remanded to prison.

The charge relates to the death of 26-year-old Dailen Paneque Gomez, a Cuban national of Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara, who was last seen alive on June 18, 2026, while on her way to work at the Mon Repos Health Centre.

Her disappearance immediately triggered concern and a police investigation, which later escalated into a murder probe.
Days later, on June 24, 2026, the woman’s decomposed body was discovered in bushes at Enmore Backdam, East Coast Demerara.
Police sources had indicated that the discovery came after sustained investigative efforts by detectives, who were tracking movements and leads developed during the missing person inquiry.
The recovery of the body marked a major turning point in the investigation, leading to the arrest of the police constable.
Kaieteur News previously reported that investigators believed the suspect was known to the victim and that initial inquiries pointed to a targeted attack after the two were believed to have met on the day she went missing.
It is further alleged that the suspect later led investigators to critical information during questioning. However, those claims have not been tested in court.
Authorities have not yet disclosed a formal motive, and the investigation remains ongoing.
With Thomas now formally charged and remanded, the matter will return before the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court on July 21, 2026.
