President Ali launches ‘model communities’ consultations in Region Three
(Kaieteur News) – President Dr. Irfaan Ali on Tuesday launched a series of community consultations in Region Three as the government rolled out a pilot programme aimed at transforming villages into safer, more connected and economically vibrant communities.
According to the Department of Public Information, the president met with residents of Leonora, Tuschen, Zeelugt, Goed Fortuin, Parfaite Harmonie and Pouderoyen to discuss proposed infrastructure upgrades, economic opportunities and development priorities. The initiative is expected to be expanded to communities across the country.
“We are launching a programme that will eventually touch every single village in our country,” President Ali told residents.

He said national development must extend beyond large-scale projects and be reflected in the communities where people live, work and raise their families.
“We want development to reach every single citizen, and we want the transformation that every citizen sees in Georgetown, in their own villages, their own communities,” he said.
Ali explained that while every community would benefit from improved infrastructure, public services and economic opportunities, no single blueprint would be imposed.
Instead, each village would retain its own identity, history and culture while residents help shape its future.
“We’re not here simply to tell you what the village should look like. We’re here to listen, because the people who live in the village know that village better than anyone else,” the president said.
According to the government information department, engineers and technical teams have spent several months assessing infrastructure gaps, commercial activity and development opportunities in the selected communities. The consultations are intended to allow residents to review those proposals and identify additional priorities for the next 10 to 20 years.
President Ali said Guyana’s economic growth must translate into better living conditions, including improved roads and drainage, safer neighbourhoods, recreational facilities and greater opportunities for families and young people.
He noted that nearly three-quarters of Guyanese live in villages, making community development central to the country’s long-term growth.
The programme is built around four pillars—Connectivity, Community, Commerce and Care.
Connectivity focuses on roads, drainage, street lighting, utilities, pedestrian safety and access to essential services. Community will emphasise parks, playgrounds, recreational facilities and programmes aimed at strengthening social cohesion.
Commerce is intended to support agriculture, markets, small businesses, artisans and other enterprises, while Care will focus on education, healthcare, environmental management, public safety and support for vulnerable residents, including persons with disabilities.
The president stressed that infrastructure alone would not build successful communities, saying development must also strengthen family values, civic responsibility and respect for others.
At Tuschen, residents were presented with proposals including a modern community market, a secure food court, expanded green spaces, support for small businesses and the use of technology to boost food production.
“We want every community to have a life of its own, to have an ecosystem of its own,” Ali said.
Meanwhile, residents of Zeelugt were told that the community will receive a new market aimed at boosting economic activity while providing a cleaner and safer environment for vendors and shoppers.

Great initiative but should include well organized, vibrant & elected Parent Teachers Associations, Community Policing Groups and Sports organizer, knowledgeable in all sports popular in Guyana not just cricket!!!
Concentration/emphasis should be placed on all depressed areas for immediate rehabilitation/renovation/upgrade having a semblance of decent , modern living with modern toilet facilities including all schools & recreational facilities!!
Foreigners with the help of the opposition forces tend to showcase Guyana as a poor backward country with primitive living!!! First & foremost we should endeavour to eradicate our country of these unsightly structures with government’s intervention with care , concern & love!!!
All outdoor toilets/latrines should also be eradicated in all villages & schools nationwide & be replaced with modern toilet facilities!!!
