Essequibo man electrocuted by wire leading to chicken pen
(Kaieteur News) – A 28-year-old Essequibo man, identified as Kelton Benn, died after being electrocuted by a wire connected to a chicken pen.
Police said in a statement that the incident occurred on Monday at around 17:30 hrs. at Ptolemy Avenue, Dartmouth Village, Essequibo Coast.
“Preliminary enquiries revealed that Benn had gone to use an outdoor toilet situated at the back of the yard. After he failed to return, a relative went in search of him and found him lying motionless next to a chicken coop,” police said.
Further enquiries revealed that an electrical wire had been run from the house to the chicken coop some months earlier to provide lighting. Two children, a nine-year-old boy and a six-year-old girl were subsequently found shaking while leaning against the structure, apparently also shocked by the exposed wiring. They were taken to the Lima Regional Hospital, where they were admitted for observation.
Benn was also taken to the Lima Regional Hospital, where he was examined and pronounced dead on arrival by the doctor on duty. His remains are at the same hospital awaiting a post-mortem examination.
Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) was contacted and disconnected the electrical wire as investigations continue.
