(Kaieteur News) – Danielle Schultz, 30, of Wismar Housing Scheme, Linden, is appealing for public assistance as she struggles with diabetes, undergoes regular dialysis treatment, and faces severe financial and domestic challenges.
For years, Schultz has battled the effects of diabetes, a condition that has left her dependent on dialysis and unable to maintain steady employment.
Compounding her difficulties is a rare congenital condition known as Dextrocardia Situs Inversus, in which the heart is located on the right side of the chest rather than the left. In her case, her internal organs are also positioned on the opposite side of the body from their normal locations.
Despite frequent hospital visits throughout her life, Schultz said medical personnel only discovered the condition in January last year.
“Nobody said anything, and only last year they noticed. And I’ve been in and out of hospital from birth, so I don’t know what’s going on,” Schultz told Kaieteur News.
While the condition itself is not considered life-threatening, Schultz said her greatest challenges stem from managing her diabetes and coping with her worsening financial situation.
Unable to work because of her health, the mother of two relies heavily on support from relatives and government assistance. She receives $600,000 annually through the government’s dialysis subvention programme.
“It’s not nothing easy, but I’m still trying. I’m struggling financially with my dialysis. My family does try, but right now nobody really has anything to give me,” she said.
Schultz explained that she was hospitalised in April and May after suffering severe back pain and shortness of breath, both times requiring treatment at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).
She alleged that after one of her hospitalizations, she entrusted her brother with the remaining $200,000 from her dialysis subvention to deposit into her bank account while she was staying with him in Georgetown.
“When I came out of hospital, he said that he gave me back $80,000, and he said he would give me the $120,000 later. To this day, after all these months, I haven’t received it,” she claimed.
According to Schultz, she reported the matter to the Agricola Police Station but was informed that without proof that she had handed over the money, little could be done.
She further alleged that her brother has withheld her oxygen tank, an item she considers essential given her recurring breathing difficulties.
Last Monday, Schultz returned to the Agricola Police Station and reported that a friend she had sent to retrieve the oxygen tank was unsuccessful because her brother refused to hand it over, claiming it had already been sent to Linden.
“He has the oxygen tank and doesn’t want to give it to me. The police in Agricola are no help. It seems like he and the police are friends. They don’t want to go by him; they prefer to call him and listen to whatever he tells them instead of checking for themselves,” Schultz alleged.
Because she frequently experiences shortness of breath, Schultz stressed that access to the oxygen tank is critical.
She also noted that she travels from Linden to Georgetown every Monday, Wednesday and Friday for dialysis treatment.
“It is very risky for me to travel without my oxygen tank,” she said.
In addition to her medical struggles, Schultz said she is facing housing difficulties and urgently needs a stable place to stay.
“I also need a place to stay because right now my family doesn’t even want me at the house that’s being constructed. I don’t know where they want me to go, but I don’t have a place right now. I have to stay there until something better can be done,” she explained.
Given her circumstances, Schultz is appealing to members of the public for assistance.

A GoFundMe account has also been established to assist her and can be accessed online.
