Rose Hall butcher dies from fractured skull, cervical spine — Autopsy
(Kaieteur News) – A post-mortem examination has confirmed that Jermaine Junior Smartt, a popular butcher from Rose Hall Town, Corentyne, died as a result of shock with cerebral haemorrhage, sustained fractures to both the skull and cervical spine — injuries consistent with the violent motorcycle collision that claimed his life earlier this week.
The autopsy was conducted on Friday by government pathologist Dr. Vivekanand Bridgemohan at Bailey’s Funeral Home, No. 4 Village, West Coast Berbice. The body was identified by Smartt’s cousin, Lawrance Rodrigues, in the presence of the police, before being released to relatives for burial.

Smartt, the sixth of nine children, lost his life following a head-on motorcycle crash on Wednesday evening along the Mibicuri Public Road, Black Bush Polder, Corentyne — a collision that also left a 14-year-old boy seriously injured.
According to police reports, Smartt was riding his motorcycle, licence plate CP 1482, heading west along the road, when teenager Swanti Culpepper of Mibicuri South, Black Bush Polder, approached from the opposite direction on a motorcycle that was reportedly without a functioning headlamp. The two riders collided, and both were flung onto the roadway, sustaining serious injuries.
Good Samaritans at the scene swiftly transported both victims — each unconscious — to the nearby Mibicuri Public Hospital. Despite receiving treatment, Smartt succumbed to his injuries at the facility. He was later transferred to Bailey’s Funeral Home ahead of Friday’s post-mortem.
Smartt’s mother, Bridgette Moore, speaking to Kaieteur News on Thursday, painted a heartbreaking picture of her son’s final moments. She revealed that she had spoken with him just minutes before the fatal crash. Moore alleged that Culpepper was riding an unregistered motorcycle — one with no lights and no functioning brakes — and that the teen had suddenly veered into her son’s path, triggering the deadly collision.
“He was riding a naked skin bike — no lights, no brakes,” Moore said.
Culpepper, a student of Mibicuri Secondary School, remains hospitalised at the No. 75 Village Hospital, Corentyne. While he regained consciousness shortly after the accident, his condition is listed as serious, and he continues to receive medical attention.
The incident has left the Rose Hall Town community in mourning, as residents remember Smartt as a familiar and well-regarded figure. Investigations into the circumstances of the crash are ongoing.
