GWI to spend $251M to drill water wells at Houston & Garden of Eden
(Kaieteur News) – The Guyana Water Inc. would be spending approximately $251 million to drill new wells at Garden of Eden and at Houston on the East Bank of Demerara.
The National Procurement and Tender Administration Board (NPTAB) revealed that Sigma Engineers Limited will drill the well at Garden of Eden for $129,164,794, and Sadhu S Singh General Construction Service will drill the well at Houston for $122,827,150.
The projects will form part of the $21.6 billion which was allocated in 2026 budget for the water sector.
During the budget presentation earlier this year, Senior Minister with the responsibility for Finance, Dr. Ashni Singh explained that the government through GWI will continue to expand its water programme to ensure access to a reliable supply of potable water nationwide.
He stated at the time that over his government’s last term, they drilled 29 deep water new wells along the coastland and 230 medium depth wells in hinterland communities.
According to the minister, going forward, in 2026, works will advance on several new wells including areas like Westminster, Yarrowkabra, and No. 56 Village which will see over 81,000 residents benefitting.
During his World Water Day message back in March, Minister of Public Utilities and Aviation, Deodat Indar noted that while potable water access is being expanded, government’s mission remains steadfast, “to fulfill Sustainable Development Goal 6, which speaks to ensuring the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all by 2030.”
Kaieteur News understands residents of Houston currently benefit from the Agricola Well Station which also serves residents in McDoom. As for residents at Garden of Eden they receive water from the Caledonia Well Station which provides services between Garden of Eden to Coverden on the East Bank.
