Citizens Advised to Practice Pandemic Safety Measures as COVID-19 Cases Resurface — APNU
(Kaieteur News) – Shadow Minister of Health and Member of Parliament Dr. Terrence Campbell on Friday urged citizens to revive the hygienic habits developed during the COVID-19 pandemic, following the resurgence of the virus in schools.
Speaking at A Partnership for National Unity’s (APNU) weekly press conference, Dr. Campbell told reporters that COVID-19 has not disappeared and that citizens should remain vigilant, particularly with regard to sanitary conditions in shared spaces. He urged parents to be mindful of their children during play and social interaction, but stressed that the current situation does not warrant panic.
“We should still practice those hygienic habits that we developed in order to reduce transfer when the epidemic was at its peak,” the politician said.

The APNU parliamentarian noted that he has been closely monitoring reports of the outbreak, and indicated that his level of concern would rise should the number of confirmed cases among children climb beyond four or five.
“So, it is a situation that we are watching cautiously, but I don’t believe at this stage there is need for excessive alarm on the situation, but it’s something to be watched for everybody. You should remember that COVID-19 is still around…” he stated.
Dr. Campbell’s comments follow a June 11 report by Kaieteur News, which revealed that health authorities in Region Six are continuing to monitor a coronavirus outbreak at the GuySuCo Training College in Port Mourant, Corentyne.
More than 20 COVID-19 cases were detected among students residing in the institution’s dormitories. While none of the cases were classified as critical, all were reported to be asymptomatic.
In response to the outbreak, the school was fully vacated, and infected students were placed in quarantine as a precautionary measure.
A health official confirmed that the situation is being carefully assessed, with contact-tracing efforts underway to identify and monitor individuals who may have come into close contact with those infected.
Authorities also noted that contingency measures remain in place should the virus spread further within the institution or beyond.
As health officials continue surveillance efforts, citizens are being encouraged to maintain basic preventative practices — including regular handwashing, sanitizing shared surfaces, and monitoring symptoms in children — as a precaution against further transmission.
