Pensioner hides boy in freezer as cutlass gang hunts down father in Rose Hall attack
(Kaieteur News) – A quick-thinking pensioner is being hailed a hero after hiding an 11-year-old boy inside an old freezer to protect him from a gang of armed men who chased and brutally chopped his father during a violent attack in Rose Hall, Corentyne, on Saturday.
The victim, Mahendra Samaroo, recounted that he was with his 11-year-old son at one of his other sons’ residence within that location around 10:00am, when he noticed about nine men charging towards him with cutlasses. One of the men reportedly drew a gun and fired multiple shots at him and his younger son.
The injuries
As the men reached to where he was, Samaroo shoved his younger son in a nearby yard and would attempt to ward off his attackers, before fleeing with the men hot on his tail.
The quick-wittedness of a nearby pensioner earned the gratitude of the family, who related to this publication that just before the commotion became full-blown, the elderly woman promptly stashed the child in an old refrigerator to keep him safe from potential harm.
The woman is said to be in her eighties.
“She take my son and hide he in a old freezer, or else I don’t know what wudda happen to he. If wasn’t for that lady, he wudda be a dead man,” the father stated in an interview with Kaieteur News.
The man managed to evade his attackers but not without injuries. In the ordeal, Samaroo sustained chops to his head, and his left hand and fingers.
“I seh this is it for me. I seh I dead.”
He said he enquired from the assailant the reason for the attack, and the man told him that he will kill him. Samaroo related that this could have been a fulfilment had he not escaped by hiding in the bathroom of someone’s home.
He told Kaieteur News that he has no known conflict with anyone, and is baffled as to why he was attacked. His son remains traumatised, he added.
Samaroo is one of two men who were attacked with cutlasses on Saturday.
In videos circulating on social media, multiple men are seen in pursuit of a man who was eventually caught after falling in front of Poonai’s Pharmacy in Rose Hall. The men would swarm the fallen man and deliver several chops.
