(Kaieteur News) – We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) Member of Parliament (MP) Vishnu Panday was on Monday unanimously elected Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) as Speaker of the National Assembly Manzoor Nadir convened a series of meetings to establish key parliamentary committees.
The meetings began at 10:30 a.m. in the Chamber of the Public Buildings, Brickdam, Georgetown, and resulted in the election of chairpersons for four Parliamentary Standing Committees and four Parliamentary Sectoral Committees.
Panday, a former GuySuCo Agriculture Director was elected in keeping with the Standing Orders, which require that the PAC be chaired by a representative from the main opposition.
Also representing the opposition on the PAC are WIN MP Nandrani Singh and A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) MPs Juretha Fernandes and Ganesh Mahipaul.
Government representatives on the committee are Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Governance Gail Teixeira, Minister of Public Works Juan Edghill, Deputy Speaker Dr. Vishwa Mahadeo, and MPs Suresh Singh and Sanjeev Datadin.
According to information released by the Parliament Office, several other key appointments were also made.
Attorney General Anil Nandlall, SC was selected to chair the Constitution Reform Committee, while Minister Gail Teixeira was appointed Chair of the Committee on Appointments.

Speaker Manzoor Nadir convened a series of meetings on Monday to elect chairpersons for the different parliamentary committees.
Prime Minister Mark Phillips was chosen to head the Security Sector Committee, while WIN MP Duarte Hetzburger was elected Chair of the Economic Services Committee.
Minister of Human Services and Social Security Vindiya Persaud will chair the Social Services Committee, Minister of Natural Resources Vickram Bharrat will lead the Natural Resources Committee, and WIN’s frontbencher, Odessa Primus was selected to chair the Foreign Relations Committee.
The Parliament Office noted that, under the Standing Orders, the chairmanship of several sectoral committees will rotate during the life of the Parliament, including the Foreign Relations Committee, which is currently headed by WIN.
It also explained that the Speaker automatically chairs the Committee of Privileges, Statutory Instruments Committee, Standing Orders Committee, Assembly Committee, and Parliamentary Management Committee.
“The constitution of these committees marks an important milestone in the work of the Thirteenth Parliament, enabling Members to begin their oversight responsibilities, examine policies and administration across sectors, and determine whether the execution of Government policy is consistent with the principles of good governance and in the best interest of all Guyanese,” the Parliament Office said in a statement.
