(Kaieteur News) – Bartica is set to receive an additional 2.2 megawatts (MW) of electricity generation capacity by the end of July, as the Guyana Power and Light Incorporated (GPL) moves to strengthen power reliability and cater for increasing demand in the township and surrounding communities.
In a statement on Monday, GPL said the project forms part of its ongoing efforts to modernise the country’s electricity infrastructure through strategic investments aimed at improving service delivery nationwide.
The utility company said a new Cummins Generating Set #4, with a capacity of 2.2MW, will be commissioned by the end of July, significantly increasing Bartica’s ability to meet growing electricity demands.
Bartica currently has an installed generation capacity of 5.3MW, while peak demand stands at approximately 3MW. GPL said the additional generating unit will improve the reliability and stability of electricity supply, while also providing reserve capacity to support continued residential, commercial and industrial expansion in the town.
Bartica is also expected to benefit from a 1.5MW Solar Farm, which forms part of GPL’s wider strategy to diversify Guyana’s energy mix through renewable energy integration.
According to GPL, the combination of solar and thermal generation will help create a more resilient and efficient electricity network for customers in the region.
“The addition of the new generating set underscores GPL’s commitment to expanding and modernising electricity infrastructure to meet increasing customer demand and support economic development in hinterland communities,” the company said.
GPL added that the investment will place the company in a stronger position to maintain a stable and reliable electricity supply in Bartica while supporting the area’s ongoing development.
