(Kaieteur News) – Only the other day, dem boys was talking ’bout the stray dog and stray cat population growing outta hand. And now, look trouble come. A man turn up in a minibus at somebody else property, gift box in hand, deposit a whole litter of kittens like he leaving a Christmas hamper. Wrong, yes. But before we jump on him, let we ask: where exactly he suppose to take them?
Dem boys hear ’bout the place by Bourda Market. You can take unwanted litters there, but they does also ask for a voluntary donation. But not everybody living near Bourda Market. So what the average man do? He does “stray” them. He carry puppies and cats to some far off spot, toss them out, and drive off fast.
Problem is some of them animals smart. Some does find they way back home. Imagine you dump a dog in the backdam and three days later, him standing at your gate, looking at you like, “You forget something?”
That ain’t no solution. That’s just passing the problem to someone else.
So here is what dem boys saying. We need more places. Not one Bourda spot—every district should have a drop-off point. Church, health centre, NDC office—somewhere open and free. And don’t tell people to make donation. If they could afford donation, they would keep the animal.
But hear this: these same places must sign a bond. No euthanize just because an animal ain’t cute enough or old enough. Keep them. Let them live. Find them homes, even if it take time. Build proper shelters. Spay and neuter before release. Because the real problem ain’t the man with the gift box. The real problem is we set up a system where doing the wrong thing is easier than doing the right thing.
Let we fix that first. Then dem boys can talk about something else.
Talk half. Leff half.
