(Kaieteur News) – Dem boys seh Guyana really wasting money with this Commission of Inquiry into the M.V. Barima. Why spend money on judges, naval architects, marine engineers and maritime experts when we got Facebook and WhatsApp?

By now, every mystery surrounding the Barima has already been solved by people who never see the vessel, never inspect the engine room and never come within a mile of the ocean. Yet somehow dem know more than the engineers, surveyors and investigators who actually have to put their hands on the evidence.

One Facebook expert already know that water was coming into the vessel through a hole. Another WhatsApp professor know exactly where the hole was and, if you give him another ten minutes, he probably could tell you the size of the bolt that was supposed to plug it.

Then you got the maintenance specialists. Dem know the Barima was not properly maintained, although most of dem maintenance experience come from changing oil in a car or calling a technician when the air-condition stop working.

Then there are the cargo experts. They know the vessel was overloaded with cargo destined for Suriname instead of Port Kaituma. How they know this? Simple. Somebody send it in a WhatsApp group.

And naturally, there are the navigation experts. These fellows know that the vessel hit a sandbank in the ocean two weeks before the tragedy. Not only do they know it hit the sandbank, they probably know the exact angle at which it struck.

Put all the stories together and Guyana has more versions of what happened to the Barima than we have WhatsApp groups. So why bother with a Commission of Inquiry?

After all, what could the Chairman and his fellow Commissioners possibly discover that Facebook has not already decided?

That is the real problem. For these social-media investigators, the COI is not going to discover the truth; it is only going to interfere with the truth they already know.

The Commission could spend months examining documents, interviewing witnesses, inspecting the vessel and analysing technical evidence. But if its findings disagree with a WhatsApp voice note from “somebody who know somebody who does work down de wharf,” then clearly the Commission got it wrong.

Dem boys seh Guyana got a new system of justice: first send the verdict on WhatsApp, then investigate the evidence.
