Police warn public about fake traffic fine messages
(Kaieteur News) – The Guyana Police Force (GPF) on Monday issued a public advisory warning citizens to be alert for fake traffic fine notices being sent to mobile phones through WhatsApp messages.
“The scam messages falsely claim that recipients have outstanding traffic fines and threaten legal action, financial penalties, or court proceedings unless payment is made within a specified period,” the GPF stated.
Several persons have reportedly received the fraudulent notices through WhatsApp and email. Among those targeted was the Head of the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU), James Singh.
It is unclear whether anyone has fallen victim to the scam, but several persons have shared screenshots of the messages they received from the scammers.

The GPF also released a screenshot of the fake traffic fine notice as part of its advisory.
A section of the fraudulent notice states: “A speed camera detected your vehicle travelling at 57 Km/h in a 50Km/h speed limit zone,” before claiming that the alleged offence violates Section 34 (Rate of Speed) of the Motor Vehicles Act.
The scam message then instructs recipients to settle the fine promptly by clicking on a link, which claims to allow them to make payment and view footage of the alleged traffic violation.
The police force has since made it clear that the notices are not authentic and warned members of the public not to click on suspicious links contained in unsolicited messages or provide personal information and banking details through unverified websites.
“The only official website of the Guyana Police Force is www.guyanapoliceforce.gy and all payments are made via MMG or BillExpress and not via card system as this scam is promoting,” the GPF stated.
Persons seeking to verify or pay traffic fines have been advised to do so only through the official portal accessible via the GPF’s website.
The police force is urging anyone who receives the fake messages to delete them immediately and report them.
“Warn family members and friends, particularly elderly and vulnerable persons who may be targeted by this scam,” the GPF advised, while assuring the public that it is investigating the fraudulent scheme and working with relevant authorities to identify those responsible.
