(Kaieteur News) – Reports of a COVID-19 outbreak at the GuySuCo Training College in Port Mourant, Corentyne, Region Six, have sparked concern among parents and relatives of students after more than 20 cases were detected at the institution.
Several students who tested positive have been placed under quarantine, while the remaining learners have been sent home. The college has been closed until further notice as health authorities move to contain the spread of the virus.
Kaieteur News has confirmed that health officials identified over 20 COVID-19 cases on Thursday.
Efforts to obtain official updates from senior regional health authorities proved unsuccessful, as calls and messages went unanswered.
However, a health official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that following the discovery of the infections, all students were immediately sent home and those who tested positive were isolated in accordance with established COVID-19 health protocols.
The official noted that none of the infected students have developed severe symptoms and that all cases are currently asymptomatic.
Asked about the region’s preparedness, the source explained that the Infectious Diseases Unit at the New Amsterdam Hospital remains on standby and is equipped to respond should any of the cases require medical intervention.
Guyana recorded its first COVID-19 case in March 2020 when a woman who had travelled from New York tested positive for the virus. She later died from related complications at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.
During the height of the pandemic, more than 74,000 cases were recorded nationwide and approximately 1,300 Guyanese lost their lives to the disease. The outbreak prompted authorities to impose lockdowns, curfews and other public health measures aimed at slowing transmission.
Region Six was among the areas heavily affected, recording more than 7,000 confirmed cases during the pandemic’s peak.
Although the World Health Organization has since declared that COVID-19 no longer constitutes a global public health emergency, health experts continue to caution that the virus remains in circulation and capable of causing outbreaks.
The latest cluster at the GuySuCo Training College has renewed concerns about the continued presence of COVID-19 and the need for vigilance in educational and residential settings.
