(Kaieteur News) – The two probation officers who were caught on camera dragging a schoolgirl through the streets have been dismissed.
The officers were attached to the Childcare and Protection Agency of the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security.
They were fired about six weeks after the incident, a source told Kaieteur News.
It is not clear why the ministry has not to date released this information, but speaking on the condition of anonymity, the source said that a tribunal was set up to investigate the matter and following the probe the two officers were dismissed.
“We are protecting children. The ministry took action in keeping with the protection of children,” the source shared, adding that it would be unethical for the ministry to allow abusers of children to continue working with them after an incident like this. “We have a zero tolerance for abuse. The ministry gets flagged for many things but it is very serious about abuse cases. We would in no way condone abuse,” the source said.
A video of the incident had surfaced on social media, showing the two officers dragging the girl who was clad in her school uniform, with one of the officers holding on to the girl’s hair as they dragged her. Persons at the bus park were heard registering their objections with the way the child was being treated.
Minister of Human Services and Social Security, Dr. Vindhya Persaud in a Facebook post had subsequently confirmed that the matter was brought to her attention and immediate action was taken. “An appalling video of a school child being dragged by two officers of the Child Protection Agency has been brought to my attention,” the minister said.
She disclosed that the officers were suspended with immediate effect and that the Guyana Police Force had been called in to take further action. “They will be held accountable for their conduct which run counter to the values and operational procedures of the Child Protection Agency,” Persaud stated. Further, she had reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to child protection, adding, “Incidents such as this cannot and will not be tolerated.”
