(Kaieteur News) – In honor of Guyana’s Diamond Jubilee Independence Anniversary, a Festival of Flowers was held in Brickdam, Cathedral on Monday 25th May and Tuesday 26th May, 2026.
In post issued via Facebook, Catholic Media Guyana stated that more than 20 sections of the Cathedral were beautifully decorated with flowers and plants in celebration of Guyana’s Diamond Jubilee of Independence.

Several sections of the cathedral of immaculate conception were beautifully decorated to mark Guyana’s 60th Independence Anniversary.
This sacred and inspiring display not only celebrates our nation’s rich heritage and natural beauty, but also serves as a gentle reminder of the message of Laudato Si’, a shared call to care for creation and protect the environment entrusted to mankind by God.
The festival attracted visitors throughout the two days, some of whom spent hours admiring the displays were able to take pictures and enjoy the beauty of the cathedral which was adorned with flowers. Participants included most of the Catholic parishes in Georgetown, professional Florists, Bishop’s High School and St. George’s Cathedral.

There was also music for all of the two days provided by five organists. A group of students from School of The Nations played on their various instruments much to the enjoyment of visitors.
The festival is a rare event at the Cathedral as the last one was held eleven years ago. It is normally held to coincide with a significant anniversary. On this occasion it was the 60th Independence anniversary’s Festival of Flowers. According to the Catholic media, the first Festival of Flowers was held in 1989, and since then only five Festivals of Flowers have been hosted, making this a truly special and memorable occasion in the life of the Cathedral and our country.
