(Kaieteur News) – Vice-President Bharrat Jagdeo on Friday spearheaded a Cabinet regional public engagement in Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne) with the aim of taking the government to the people.
The ministerial outreach forms part of the vice president’s Public Day exercise, and follows his most recent, which was held at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre (ACCC) in Georgetown, and at the Essequibo Technical Institute in Anna Regina, Essequibo.

Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo and Minister with responsibility for Finance, Dr. Ashni Singh listens to a resident of Region Six during his government outreach on Friday.
Hundreds of Region Six residents attended the public engagement at which critical concerns were addressed by the government ministries and agencies present at multiple sections of the campus.
The main interest for many, including young professionals, was the fast-tracking of the housing and land acquisition process. Queues seeking to engage officials from the Central Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA) extended further than those awaiting the services of the other agencies.
In that regard, the vice president instructed that the best practical means be employed to expedite those arrangements, affirming, “today, I want people to leave with a clear idea when they are getting their house lots.”
Other matters pertained to Ministry of Public Works, the National Insurance Scheme (NIS), the Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI), and other utility services concerns in communities.
Newly appointed Regional Executive Officer (REO) of Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne), Donald Harsaywack hailed the event as a good initiative. He told this publication that the process was very simple and straightforward.
“So far, we’ve had a very high level of resolution, and there are some issues that require additional information, require additional resources, require some other processes to get resolved, and of course all of those were documented and will be addressed in the coming days,” the REO assured.
He also said that the feedback garnered summed up that the event was productive, particularly since matters were resolved in a timely manner. Citizens can expect follow-ups to their concerns.
“At the Regional Democratic Council, we will also work with these agencies to ensure that these matters are fully ventilated and fully resolved, and to ensure that we continue to have systems in place, so we don’t have a buildup of these kind of issues in the future,” Harsaywack stated.
Prior to the VP’s outreach, he also officially handed over 22 garbage trucks to the 19 Neighbourhood Democratic Councils (NDCs) and the 3 municipalities of the Region, to strengthen its waste management capacity.
