(Kaieteur News) – A 17-year-old of Belvedere, Corentyne, Berbice, who has been charged with murder, was on Thursday remanded to the Juvenile Holding Centre when he appeared before Magistrate Michelle Matthias at the New Amsterdam Magistrates’ Court.
Dave Latchminarine, who fatally stabbed 48-year-old Carter Babolall on May 22, 2026, was not required to plead when the charge was read to him.
Babolall resided at Masjid Street, Nigg Settlement, Corentyne.
The prosecution promptly objected to bail, and sought time to receive additional legal advice. Summarising its position, the prosecution said that the court is duty-bound to deny bail for capital offence cases.
Meanwhile, Attorney Vinay Punwa, representing Latchminarine, signaled his intention to engage the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to have the murder charge reduced to manslaughter.
The attorney reminded the court that his client is a minor and is a part-time construction worker and wash bay attendant. Punwa emphasized that the victim habitually bullied and harassed the teenager, noting that there were prior incidents where he was attacked by Babolall.
Punwa told the court that on the day in question Babolall saw his client at the wash bay and approached him aggressively and an altercation ensued. The teen, according to the lawyer, was forced to take defensive measures, even as Baboolall had him pinned with his knee. He posited that the teen, in desperation, reached for a knife from his pocket with which he had peeled mangoes earlier, and stabbed the man.
Last Monday, the boy’s mother in an interview with Kaieteur News said that he was provoked to committing the crime. She detailed a history of alleged inciting and assault that dates four years back by Babolal.
The case has been transferred to the Albion Magistrates’ Court, upon the request of the prosecution. It is scheduled to conclude on June 30, 2026. Latchminarine will remain at the Juvenile Holding Centre until the case is completed.
