(Kaieteur News) – For Diviena Singh, Statistics was never just about numbers. It was about understanding life through people, trends, and the stories hidden within data.
That passion, coupled with years of determination and sacrifice, recently earned her the distinction of becoming the first recipient of the Bureau of Statistics’ Award for Best Graduating Student in Statistics at the University of Guyana.

Diviena Singh is first recipient of Bureau of Statistics Award for Best Graduating Student in Statistics.
As a recent graduate of the University’s Bachelor of Science in Statistics programme, Singh described the recognition as both humbling and deeply meaningful.
“I felt extremely honoured and grateful,” she shared. “Knowing I would be the first recipient of this specific award made it even more meaningful to me. It felt rewarding to see years of hard work and determination being recognised in such a significant way.”
Singh explained that her journey into Statistics began with a love for Mathematics in her early scholastic years and an unfamiliar knack for problem-solving. However, as she progressed through the programme, her appreciation for the discipline evolved into something much greater.
“We all use Statistics without even realizing it,” she explained. “Every decision we make based on previous outcomes or trends is essentially using data in some form. I truly believe that data tells a story, and Statistics helps transform that data into meaningful insights that can support better decision-making and more effective policy implementation.”
Throughout her academic journey, Singh faced the difficult challenge of balancing university studies with work and personal responsibilities. She admitted that at times the demands felt overwhelming, but discipline, careful time management, and a strong support system helped her push through to completion.
“It takes a village,” she reflected. “I was fortunate to have support from my family, friends, lecturers, and course mates. There were quite a few moments where I wanted to quit, but they kept encouraging me not to give up.”
Despite the challenges, she described her experience in the programme as both demanding and rewarding. One of the aspects she enjoyed most was applying statistical techniques through practical projects, which strengthened her analytical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
The young graduate is of the view that Statistics will play an increasingly important role in Guyana’s continued development. As Guyana continues to expand and modernize, she emphasised that the ability to collect, analyse, and interpret data will remain essential for sustainable growth and national development.
Looking ahead, she hopes to continue growing professionally and academically within the field of Statistics and data analysis, while exploring ways data can contribute to research and national development.
Singh also encouraged young people considering the field to embrace both the challenges and opportunities that come with it. She opined that “Statistics is a challenging but rewarding field”. “It’s great for anyone who enjoys problem-solving and working with data, but it requires dedication and persistence. It can also open powerful career opportunities across many industries.”
Reflecting on her journey, she said her proudest achievement was not simply earning the award but overcoming the obstacles that stood in her way. She maintains that she was guided by the words “the harder the battle, the sweeter the victory”
For the Bureau of Statistics, the young woman’s achievement not only celebrates academic excellence, but also highlights the growing importance of Statistics in shaping Guyana’s future. (Modified from Statistics Guyana Facebook page)
