(Kaieteur News) – The Ministry of Education and the Guyana Power and Light Incorporated (GPL) on Wednesday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen technical education and create greater employment opportunities for students pursuing technical careers.
In a statement GPL said that, “The partnership will support GPL’s accelerated Technician Training Programme by creating a sustainable pool of skilled trainee technicians from institutions including the Government Technical Institute, New Amsterdam Technical Institute, Essequibo Technical Institute, and Upper Corentyne Industrial Training Centre.”
The terms of the agreement allow for the technical institutes to work collaboratively to align training with the needs of the industry, therefore ensuring that students gain the technical skills and the competencies that are required for careers in the power sector.
Minister of Education Sonia Parag in her address described the initiative as a positive step that will benefit students countrywide by creating greater opportunities for technical training and career development.
Head of the Executive Management Committee at GPL, Kesh Nandlall, noted that “the initiative comes at a critical time as GPL continues to embark on several major infrastructure projects that will require additional skilled personnel to support the Company’s expanding infrastructure and operations.”
For the company, the MoU supports the efforts to maintain a highly skilled workforce that is capable of meeting the country’s growing demands in the electricity sector. For the students, the partnership provides access to competency-based technical training, practical exposure, industry guidance and potential employment opportunities on successful completion of their training.
GPL remains committed to investing in workforce development and building partnerships that create meaningful opportunities for young Guyanese while supporting national development.
