(Kaieteur News) – Winston Hazel was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment and ordered to pay a multimillion-dollar fine on Thursday following his conviction for cocaine trafficking.
Appearing before Magistrate Fabayo Azore at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on April 30, Hazel faced charges stemming from a high-profile Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU) operation.
The court found him guilty of the possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking, specifically involving 5.814 kilograms of cocaine. In addition to the custodial sentence, Magistrate Azore imposed a mandatory fine of GYD $8,721,000. The case originated from a March 2022 operation in the Guyhoc Park, Tucville area. During the exercise, CANU officers intercepted a motorcar containing two occupants. A subsequent search of the vehicle revealed five parcels of cocaine, which were later confirmed to weigh 5.814 kilograms.
Hazel was remanded to begin his sentence immediately following the ruling.
