May 02, 2026 Dem Boys Seh, Features / Columnists
(Kaieteur News) – Dem boys seh Guyana got more lawyers than law books, and nobody ain’t even surprised no more. Every corner shop got a resident “Senior Counsel,” and all he qualification is two loud arguments and a WhatsApp group.
Yuh ever notice how fast people does become legal experts? Let two car kiss up on de road—before de police even reach, three bystanders done quote traffic law, two pass judgment, and one man writing imaginary charges in he head. One driver does be saying, “Boss, under Section… eh… something, you wrong!” And de next one replying, “No bai, is precedent from last Friday accident by Regent Street!” Meanwhile, de traffic cop watching dem like he just enter a courtroom without a wig.
Dem boys seh social media make it worse. Everybody now walking with de Constitution in dem pocket—well, not de actual book, but some screenshot from somewhere. People quoting articles that sound so official even de Constitution would blink and say, “Hold on, when I get that clause?” You does see long posts start with, “According to Article 149 subsection (Z), paragraph 3…”—and end with a recipe for cook-up rice.
And don’t mind workplace either. If yuh get a problem, is not HR you go to—it’s Girlie from Accounts. Girlie done “study law” through observation. She gon tell you, “Technically, they can’t fire you if you blink twice on a Tuesday.” And suddenly, everybody in de office filing imaginary lawsuits in dem mind.
Visa talk? Is a whole next level. Guyanese who never reach Timehri airport yet, explaining US immigration law like dem just retire from de embassy. “Listen to me,” dem does say, “once yuh cousin aunt dog used to live in Brooklyn, yuh qualified for permanent residence.” Immigration lawyers charging money, but Uncle Son Son giving free advice with a confidence that should be illegal.
Dem boys seh at dis rate, Guyana ain’t need more law schools—we need more law books, so people could at least pretend properly. Because right now, everybody practising law, and de only thing missing… is de actual law.
Talk half. Leff half.
