(Kaieteur News) – The Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development is now seeking bids for the rehabilitation of the East Ruimveldt Market in Georgetown and for the construction of market facilities at Pouderoyen in Region Three and at Buxton/ Friendship on the East Coast of Demerara.
According to an invitation for bids issued, works at East Ruimveldt will be done in five lots, while Pouderoyen works will be executed in blocks (A-C). Bids for these projects are expected to open on May 20, 2026 at the NPTAB office.
Regarding the rehabilitation for East Ruimveldt Market, back in February, Minister Priya Manickchand and her team conducted a walkthrough at the facility where plans were announced to have the structure upgraded.
The ministry reported at the time that during the engagement, vendors highlighted a number of challenges affecting their daily operations, including structural issues, sanitation concerns, drainage, and the overall need for upgrades to create a safer and more comfortable environment for business.
Minister Manickchand assured vendors that their concerns are being taken seriously and form part of the Government’s broader efforts to modernise and rehabilitate markets across the country.
During the interaction, the minister emphasised that markets remain critical economic hubs within communities, providing livelihoods for hundreds of families while ensuring access to fresh produce and goods for residents. She noted that plans are in place to rehabilitate the East Ruimveldt Market, with works aimed at improving infrastructure, enhancing sanitation facilities, addressing drainage concerns, and creating a more organised and resilient space for vendors and customers alike.
It was reported in the media that over $18 billion was approved from the national budget for market projects across the country. In addition to constructing new markets, the money will cater to rehabilitate the structures at Port Kaituma, Bath, Railway Line, Unity, Rose Hall and Lethem, just to name a few.
