(Kaieteur News) – Guyana eyes breakthrough on Day 3 in Oregon. Guyana’s pursuit of its first medal at the World Athletics U20 Championships in 14 years continues today, with middle-distance standout Olivia Solomon and sprint duo Tishawn Eastman and Skylar Charles set to carry the country’s hopes on Day Three of the championships in Oregon, USA.

Olivia Solomon will run in today’s women’s 800m semis.

Fresh off an impressive performance on Tuesday, Solomon will line up in the women’s 800m semi-finals today.

The CARIFTA Games Under-17 800m gold medallist secured automatic qualification by clocking 2:06.55 in her heat, a performance that not only booked her place in the next round but also established a new Guyana National U20 record.

Meanwhile, Guyana’s sprint hopes will rest with Eastman and Charles in the men’s 200m, where both athletes will be aiming to gain places in the next round and keep the country’s medal aspirations alive.

Eastman has been drawn in Heat Four and enters the event with a personal best of 20.98s, while Charles, who boasts a lifetime best of 21.03s, will compete in Heat Five.

Eastman returns to the track after an positive showing in the men’s 400m yesterday, where he advanced to the semi-finals, registering 46.34s to finish fourth his heat.

Guyana also enjoyed encouraging performances in the men’s and women’s 400m heats, with Malachi Austin and Tianna Springer both winning their respective races to advance comfortably to last evening’s semi-finals.

Austin, who earlier this season became the first Guyanese athlete to run under 45 seconds for the 400m, controlled his heat to victory in 46.48s.

Springer, regarded as one of the world’s premier junior quarter-milers, also looked composed as she crossed the line first in 52.39s.

Up to press time, the results of the 400m semi-finals involving Easton, Austin and Springer were not yet available.

The Guyanese contingent continues its quest to secure the nation’s first medal at the World U20 Championships since Kadecia Baird claimed the women’s 400m silver medal at the 2012 championships in Barcelona, Spain.
