(Kaieteur News) – Police Sergeant Darrel Wilson who was involved in an accident in the wee hours of Sunday morning, which took the life of Keshon Arthur has died.
This was confirmed by a Facebook post made by Al Junior Wilson, on his page.
In the post he said that the family is now mourning Wilson’s passing and is calling for there to be greater responsibility on the country’s roadways. Video footage of what he claims to be Wilson’s dashboard camera showed the vehicles colliding head on.
“Wilson, 33, was on his way to work when the collision occurred. Reports indicate that Arthur had been heavily drinking at the “U, Me and R&B” event and was allegedly racing with friends while travelling toward Mahaica,” the Facebook post said.
Initially Wilson was treated at the Enmore Regional Hospital for a broken leg and other injuries. He was then transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) where he succumbed during surgery on Monday.
His now grieving family is now making a heartfelt appeal to the public, “One bad decision cost us Darrel. Drinking and driving destroys lives. Please think before you get behind the wheel.”
“They are urging all drivers to exercise caution and responsibility on the roads. “Let this be a lesson. Be patient. Be safe.” The tragic incident continues to highlight ongoing concerns about road safety, reckless driving, and dangerous overtaking practices along the East Coast corridor,” the post added.
On April 13 this publication reported that 27-year-old labourer lost his life and a police sergeant was hospitalised following a head-on collision along the Enmore Public Road, East Coast Demerara, in the early hours of Sunday morning.
The accident occurred around 05:45hrs and involved motorcar PAB 1013, driven by Arthur, and motorcar PAM 3828, driven by a 33-year-old police sergeant of Belmont, Mahaica.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the police sergeant was proceeding west along the southern driving lane when Arthur, who was travelling in the opposite direction, allegedly attempted to overtake several vehicles. During the manoeuvre, his vehicle reportedly ended up in the path of the oncoming car.
Despite attempts by the police sergeant to avoid the collision by swerving further south, the front right side of Arthur’s vehicle collided with his car.
Arthur was pronounced dead and his body was later taken to the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, where it awaits a post-mortem examination.
Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal accident.
