Kaieteur News – The Guyana Water Inc. (GWI) is preparing to spend approximately $130 million to drill two new potable water wells and execute other rehabilitation works at Salbora Catchment in Mahdia, Region Eight, and Lethem, Region Nine.
According to information provided on the National Tender Board website, 19 contractors bid for the project at Lethem and the project is estimated to cost $78 million.
A total of 15 contractors bid for the Mahdia project and the works is estimated at $52 million.
As reported previously, the sum of $1.5 billion was approved for hinterland water supply under the Ministry of Public Utilities and Aviation in this year’s budget.
During the presentation of this year’s budget, Senior Minister with the responsibility for Finance, Dr. Ashni Singh disclosed that last year over 90 wells were completed along with improvements to water distribution systems in the hinterland in areas such as Kumaka, Kato, and Aishalton.
In 2026, he noted that the government will provide access to water to over 37,000 hinterland residents through key interventions such as construction of new wells and water distribution systems, and deploying solar PV systems to enhance reliability and reduce operating cost.
“Procure and install electromechanical components and critical spares to ensure operational reliability and long-term sustainability of existing systems. Procure and install water treatment systems to address high iron content and salinity across hinterland townships and villages,” he explained.
