Truck reverses into GPL pole causing power outage at Diamond
(Kaieteur News) – A truck reversed into a utility pole at Third Avenue Diamond, East Bank Demerara (EBD) on Saturday damaging it along with another vehicle while causing a power outage in that community.

The Guyana Power and Light Incorporated (GPL) in a statement said the incident occurred around 09:30hrs, as the impact resulted in dislodgement of associated hardware, which caused electrical arching and damage to a customer’s vehicle that was nearby. No injuries were reported.
“The driver subsequently fled the scene. GPL has since made contact with the owner of the vehicle, Mr. Anson Charles, who has provided information to assist with the investigation. The matter has been reported to the Diamond Police Station, and efforts are ongoing to locate the driver,” the company said.

GPL condemned the dangerous, irresponsible behaviour which was not only disruptive to customers’ service but posed a serious risk to members of the public. The power company said that such incidents are treated with utmost seriousness and commits to pursuing, as it has done in the past, all of the available avenues to ensure that the perpetrators are held responsible.
“GPL is again strongly urging drivers and equipment operators to exercise extreme caution when operating near electrical infrastructure. The increasing frequency of these types of incidents is deeply alarming and unacceptable, as they continue to place lives at risk and compromise the reliability of the electricity network,” the company said.
Further, GPL warned that even minor contact with its infrastructure can have far reaching and severe consequences, including service interruptions, damage to property and potential injury or loss of life.
