(Kaieteur News) – A spirit of celebration, faith, and renewed purpose filled the community of Fyrish, Corentyne, Berbice, as Chhangur Memorial International Ministries (CMIM) officially opened its doors at Lot 68, Main Road. The grand opening ceremony, held on Easter Sunday, April 5, 2026, drew congregants, community leaders, and well-wishers from across the region and internationally, marking a significant milestone in the spiritual landscape of Guyana.
The opening of CMIM, a Christian church, stands as a testament to the lifelong vision of Ms. Verne “Candy” Chhangur and continues the Chhangur family’s legacy of teaching the Word of God at the very location where the church now stands.
The church’s mission is to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ, make disciples of all nations, and positively impact the community. Leading up to the inauguration, during the event, and afterward, the church has been actively distributing supplies to residents. By God’s grace and the continued support of organizations such as Victory International, Project Life, All Nations Church, New Life Baptist Church, and others, the grand opening was a success.
In observance of Easter Sunday, Rev. Dr. Mark S. Vasconcellos delivered a sermon on the “Resurrection of Christ” from Mark 16. He reminded those in attendance—both in person and online—of the hope found in Jesus Christ, who rose from the dead as promised, ascended after 40 days, and will one day return.

At left Dr. Mark Vasconcellos, Pastor at All Nations Church in Raleigh, North Carolina and Dr. Devanand Tika, Pastor of Christian Life Centre, Enterprise, ECD.
Attendees included Rev. Dr. Devanand Tika, Mrs. Candida Tika, Joshua Sudial, Pastor Joel Beckham, Mrs. Karyn Vasconcellos, Dr. Enoch Holloway, Dr. Marion Holloway, Pastor Ken Porter, Ambassador Rudy Collins, members of the Chhangur family (Errol and Brian), community leaders, and family and friends from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Jamaica, and beyond.
CMIM aims to bring people together through faith, promote understanding and unity, and inspire transformation both locally and globally. As the doors of the new church opens so too begins a new chapter of hope and spiritual growth for the Berbice community.
Community members expressed optimism that the ministry will serve as a beacon of light, fostering unity, compassion, and faith for generations to come.
The church is led by Rev. Dr. Mark S. Vasconcellos, a Guyanese-born international pastor whose work has earned widespread respect in theological circles, humanitarian efforts, and the pursuit of justice. His leadership brings both global experience and a deep-rooted connection to his homeland.
Dr. Vasconcellos serves as an Elder and International Pastor at All Nations Church in Raleigh, North Carolina. He is an ordained minister in North Carolina and an ordained bishop in Guyana. His ministry reflects a strong commitment to both local outreach and global missions, having shared the Gospel across five continents, including Belgium, Brazil, Canada, England, France, Germany, Guyana, India, Israel, Jamaica, the Netherlands, Morocco, Nepal, Portugal, Spain, Thailand, Vietnam, and the United States.
A distinguished pastor, church planter, and speaker, Dr. Vasconcellos has lectured internationally, including engagements in North and South India. In late 2025, he delivered lectures on the History of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at North Carolina State University. His work integrates faith, education, and social awareness, emphasizing the role of the Church in addressing both spiritual and societal needs.
His dedication to service has been widely recognized. In 2024, he received U.S. Congressional Recognition for his advocacy and contributions to community development in North Carolina. In 2015, former President and Prime Minister of Guyana Samuel Hinds recognized him for his service to the Guyanese people. In 2003, he received the “Ambassador for Peace” award in South Florida.
Dr. Vasconcellos holds a Doctorate and a Master’s degree from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, North Carolina, a Bachelor’s degree from Florida International University, and an Associate degree from Miami Dade College. His theological training includes studies in Biblical Geography Study in Israel and coursework in Buddhism and Islam in Chiang Mai, Thailand.
Beyond the pulpit, Dr. Vasconsellos is also an experienced educator and trainer, with a professional background that includes serving as a law enforcement instructor. This experience has shaped his disciplined approach to leadership and ministry. Fluent in English and Spanish, he continues to impact lives through teaching, mentorship, and service.
On Wednesday, April 8, Dr.Vasconsellos and Mr. Joshua Sudial visited Sarah Elisabeth Shivpersaud (the mother charged with murder and attempted murder of her children) at Port Mourant Hospital. They prayed for her, emphasizing forgiveness and peace through Jesus Christ, and promised to bring her a Bible later that week. He also reminded her that a brief moment in her life does not define who she is. Later that evening, he led a Bible study for adults and children, and all attendees received supplies. The large concrete cross in front of the church has become a landmark for those traveling to Fyrish.
